Help on web product finishing in new WOCG guide

A new Web Offset Champion Group guide produced with help from Müller Martini urges cooperation and communication throughout the production process.

The 36-page guide, called 'Perfectly Finished Web Printed Products’, offers free tips for printers and bookbinders, and is part of an ongoing WOCG ‚best practice’ series.

Co-author Felix Stirnimann, who is a director of Muller Martini, says that when things go wrong in the finishing process, it is often because the bookbinder is so far removed from the design and specification process that there is no meaningful communication.

The guideline aims to close such communication gaps.

“By incorporating designers, customers, publishing houses, printers, bookbinders and suppliers, our guidebook will help to improve communication and understanding among everyone involved in the process chain and thus increase the quality of the printed products,” says Stirnimann.

The final quality depends not on the finishing process, but also to a great extent on the printing process. That is why the 36-page brochure in A4 format from WOCG – of which Muller Martini is the only member that manufactures finishing systems – also deals in detail with the topics of paper selection, prepress, printing inks, drying, remoistening and folding.

The various finishing processes with their specific characteristics as described in the guideline include:

- Press delivery with specialised scetions on trim quality, stability in palletising and avoiding shipping damages to printed products;

- Saddle stitching with particular focus on preparation steps, three-knife trimming and paper breaks on the spines; and

- Adhesive binding with special attention to adhesives, controlling methods and bookbinding systems.

This eighth WOCG guideline will be a treasure trove for printers, bookbinders, advertising agencies and print buyers, and is available in English, German, Spanish, French, and Italian.
