Goss is reconfiguring several existing Metro double-width presses at ‘Newsday’ in New York to create three upgraded lines with doubled colour capacity.

The enhanced presses will go into production from next month at its Melville, New York, plant. They print the flagship ‘Newsday’ daily – which reaches nearly 1.4 million readers weekly on Long Island and New York city – as well as other products.

Units and folders are being relocated, drive lines and motors modified and repositioned, and customised stacking frames and platforming installed.

Goss will also add motorised registration to the presses and convert the web width of one of them to 1220 mm. The three upgraded presses will print up 96 tabloid pages with 64 in full colour, at up to 60,000 cph.

Work began in Melville in January, with Goss responsible for project management, installation and commissioning, with a technical team and press operators from Newsday assisting. Specialised structural components come from the Goss machining and manufacturing facility in Kennedale, Texas.
