Having absorbed PANPA/Newspaper Publishers Association at the start of this year, Australian industry group The Newspaper Works has appointed an executive director of publishing with roles which partly replicate those of departed PANPA chief executive Mark Hollands.

Mitchell Murphy (right) will join the Sydney-headquartered group on September 3, three days before the PANPA Future Forum and Newspaper of the Year awards dinner, which become part of his responsibility.

Most recently publisher of Fairfax New Zealand’s Auckland broadsheet ‘Sunday Star-Times’ and Auckland Now website, Murphy has spent more than 25 years in the newspaper industry.

TNW chief executive Tony Hale says the newly-created role reflects the merging of The Newspaper Works with PANPA: “He will undertake roles previously overseen by PANPA including organising the Newspaper of the Year Awards and overseeing the PANPA Bulletin and ezine News Now,” he says.

Murphy will also represent the newspaper industry, developing strong relationships with all industry partners.

His previous roles have included editor-in-chief and circulation director at Fairfax’s ‘Illawarra Mercury’, group editor-in-chief of Fairfax Community Newspapers in NSW and Victoria, and founding managing editor of www. brisbanetimes.com.au.

He has also worked at APN News & Media and News Limited, holds an MBA and is a member of the Harvard Business Review Advisory Council.
