A DGM430 single-width press at commercial printer McLaren Press Graphics is to be equipped with QI Press Controls closed-loop colour and cutoff system.

The Bracebridge , Ontario, plant will get the company’s latest mRC-3D technology, replacing an older system, which did not include cutoff controls.

President Drew McLaren says McLaren was one of the first commercial printers to install registration controls on a non-heatset press in the 1990s: “We recognised the ROI immediately. Given the relatively high cost of this technology at the time, we still experienced significant cost savings to justify this investment,” he says.

“This was achieved despite the fact that we were running lower cost uncoated substrates than typical heat-set installations, who were the first companies to invest in this technology because they were running higher cost coated stocks yielding greater savings.”

McLaren says the mRC-3D’s depth-scanning principle is ideal for their DGM430 press configuration, which has some fairly long web leads: “It functions perfectly in such an environment.”

The seven-tower DGM430 press has an 890mm web width and 578 mm cut-off, and dates from 1994-2008. QI says the order was finalised with the assistance of Canadian agent Graphic Machinery Sales.
