Less ink, brighter images from optimisation

Ink cost savings of more than a quarter are claimed following a US newspaper’s adoption of cloud-based optimisation software.

Two newspapers in the Athens, Georgia, based Community Newspapers group have become enthusiastic users. Colleagues from the Franklin Press in North Carolina told the Northeast Georgian in Georgia of their experiences with the ProImage OnColor ECO product.

Lee Dunlap, press foreman at Georgia Mountain Press which prints the Northeast Georgian as well as a number of surrounding community newspapers, claims savings of more than 25 per cent of ink cost and less waste at start-up: “We now use less ink on process colour images and I am able to brighten the other colour elements on the page,” he says.

The system also makes it easier to hide poor registration caused by slightly crooked plates.

While volumes vary, Georgia Mountain Press prints 50,000-65,000 copies of about 100 pages during the midweek. Community Newspapers owns 28 newspapers in Georgia, Florida and North Carolina.
