Experience with battery-assisted RFID tags in tracking newsprint reels was presented at an Ifra conference in Copenhagen in April.
Doron Guttman of PowerID says Israel’s largest daily newspaper, ‘Yedioth Ahronoth’ had been looking for a better way to manage newsprint supply. A solution was passive battery-assisted RFID tags which cost about 0.15 Euros a tag and contributed to a return on investment of about 18 months.
Paper manufacturer Holmen believes that all paper reels will be RFID-tagged within a few years, and other mills were showing interest, he says.
Ifra research director Manfred Werfel says Ifra’s 2007 special report on RFID will be updated to include the results of the Yedioth pilot.
