Zimbabwe Newspapers is backing its move to digital-first with a commitment to build what it says will be Africa’s largest digital newsroom.

Zimpapers board chairperson Doreen Sibanda announced the move at a strategic planning workshop, telling senior management strategy will result in both audience and revenue growth.

Traditional media “still generate the bulk of our revenue and must not be neglected, but digital must be the absolute priority,” she said.

Sibanda says the new newsroom will be one of the best on the African continent, “and you are going to be proud to be part of it.

“But there is no point in having a great newsroom if we are not going to experience growth in both our audiences and revenue”.

She said a big responsibility rests on the shoulders of editors to create new digital-first content that will connect with audiences, both young and old.

“Our audiences are digital-first and we are not quite there yet,” she said. “We have no option but to change and change quickly. As we plan for 2025, there must be a relentless focus on digital transformation, while continuing to respect the rich heritage of our print and broadcasting sectors.”

Sibanda also reported “significant strides” by the company’s commercial printing operations following consolidation into a single hub, a move that with investment in new machines, will drive new growth opportunities.

Additionally, Zimpapers was about to launch of the Typocrafters bookshop and coffee corner at Herald House, “presenting unique opportunities for book launches and panel discussions”.

She announced coverage expansion for national station Star FM, regional stations Diamond FM, and Platinum FM, with transmitters to be installed at Denzva Mountain and Ngezi Peak.
