INMA product and tech lead Jodie Hopperton (above) will be a keynote speaker at LINA’s summit in Melbourne next month.
Based in Los Angeles, she is a British media executive focussed on the intersection of product, technology and news media, and will explore how media can leverage product thinking to drive growth and navigate AI.
Plans are progressing for the summit, to be held at Melbourne Connect from April 2-4. Topics are likely to include the role of journalism in civic engagement, social change, combatting mis and disinformation, and election coverage, with three pre-conference workshops around learning, collaborating and sharing with one another. Travel subsidies are available for member publishers.
The corridors of power were abuzz with speculation about the upcoming election when LINA executive director Claire Stuchbery and policy & strategic communications officer Nell O’Shea Carre (pictured below) were in Canberra earlier.
Timed for the first session of parliament, their trip involved meetings with MPs, advisors and department staff, with discussions focussed on government advertising processes, the next steps for the News Media Assistance Programme rollout and the federal budget.
Apart from the election, a popular topic in the hallways was how to strengthen trust in media and institutions, Stuchbery says.
A number of LINA publisher members have received News Media Relief Programme grants in the past month, the much-needed funding helping many independent news publications to continue.
An online ‘Google x LINA’ webinar provides tools to help with election coverage and research, as well as advice on growing loyalty and revenue during election time.
Also ahead is a live event (March 18) focussed on securing the sustainability of news and journalism, centred around sustainable media business models in the context of changing consumer behaviours, advertising trends, the threats of mis- and disinformation and the impacts of artificial intelligence. Organised by the IIC Australian Chapter and the Centre for Media Transition, the in-person event is at the Holding Redlich building in Sydney.
LINA reports new members include Crikey publisher Private Media, East Regional View, and David Koch’s Pinstripe Media.
