Hopes for a face-to-face World News Media Congress this year have been dashed following consultation with stakeholders including strategic partner Taiwan’s United Daily News.

The decision “in light of the health restrictions applied in the country”, will now see the WAN-Ifra event held virtually from November 29 to December 2. The group is still scheduling the 2022 World News Media Congress for Zaragoza, Spain, with Taipei now to host the event in June 2023.

This year’s virtual Congress will include the World Media Leaders Summit, the World Editors Summit, announcement of the Golden Pen of Freedom, and the Women in News Summit, and is free for WAN-Ifra members. Details are on the event website, with registration open here.

WAN-Ifra says the decision to move the Congress online follows consultation with exhibitors, speakers, officials and UDN. The group has grown its offering of virtual business events this year, with more than 7000 attending virtual events worldwide.

Next year’s Congress is scheduled from September 28-30, in partnership with Spanish publishing house Henneo, with the 2023 Taipei Congress currently set for June.

The three-day 2019 Congress in Glasgow drew around 900 delegates from more than 60 countries.
