UK struts its best ideas in annual awards fest

Bright print and digital ideas abounded in this year’s UK Newspaper Awards, announced last week.

Among print innovations, the judges’ favourite was a part-width ‘bookmark’ in The Guardian newspaper, entered by its Guardian Print Centre…. in fact they were “very excited” by it, asking why it hadn’t been thought of before. The panel called it “clever, beautifully simple innovation that would hold huge appeal for its advertisers.”

Winners included panorama posters from Trinity Mirror Printing Midlands and Webprint Ireland – both making use of the extended format of their presses – a first sticker using Ferag/WRH Marketing’s MemoScent in the Daily Telegraph, translucent wrap in the Hull Daily Mail (Mortons of Horncastle), and a digitally-printed Racing Pocket Post, printed by Stroma for a special event.

The privately-owned (since 2007) Racing Post was also a winner in the digital categories, its iPad app scoring the PCS award and title ‘newspaper app of the year’ and winning the Océ-sponsored ‘digital innovation’ category (below).

Described by judges as “a real betting haven and one that will appeal hugely to its core audience”, it is an enriched edition of the print newspaper, which can be downloaded each evening before print copies are available. Racing Post also has an iPhone app reported to have had over one-million bets placed and more than half a million downloads.

Other winners were the London24 app, interactive First News+ and iPad editions from The Guardian/Observer, Metro, The Scotsman and The Times.

Other digital innovation winners were Metro, the mobile website of The Guardian, comment site Independent Voices, The Sunday Times – Style Hotlist, and Worldcrunch, an app which selects, translates and edits content from foreign language news outlets .

Guardian.co.uk was also the winner of the digital news service of the year category, ahead of highly commended huffingtonpost.co.uk.
