The Age is tops, as is WAN’s press check app

A smartphone app which monitors production on the giant hybrid press at West Australian Newspapers won the Seven West company this year’s PANPA innovation prize.

The app delivers a web-based representation of the status of each of the double-width KBA Colora presses at the Herdsman, Perth, print centre in ‘near real time’.

The award was one of a cluster collected by WAN’s Liam Roche during the Newspaper of the Year awards night. The company also won the technical excellence prize for its category for printing of The West Australian, and for single-width production of the Bunbury Herald. In the preprint or supplement categories, WAN was awarded for Broome Happenings, and Community Newspapers for Community Residential.

Coveted newspaper of the year title in the top 90,000 circulation daily category went to The Age, recognizing a “hugely impressive” year for the Melbourne metro in which it switched to compact (tabloid) format and embraced a “digital first” strategy.

Editor-in-chief Andrew Holden is pictured on our homepage acknowledging the ward announced by host Annabel Crabb, now an ABC personality.

The evening included presentations for top marketing, digital and photography awards. North Queensland-based Tully Times was back for a second award for its ‘Read to me’ literacy initiative, and the Fiji Sun and Fiji Times were also among young readers winners. Pictured right are Rosi Doviverata and Jyoti Pratibnha of the Fiji Sun.

Editor of Fairfax Media’s The Land Sally White is this year’s winner of the Hegarty Prize scholarship, and Melbourne’s Herald-Sun – represented by David Johnson – collected a first multiplatform brand award.

A lifting device for part-rolls of newsprint won the health and safety award for Newcastle-based Fairfax Regional Printers.
