Quad/Graphics,one of Goss’s biggest Sunday web press users, is retrofitting a Sunday 3000 with the company’s DigiRail inking system. Part of a scheduled enhancement of the eight-unit press, the retrofit is expected to improve presetting speed and accuracy, reduce start-up waste and simplify colour control. The technology uses gear pumps to feed ink pulses to the ink train through individual valves, so that the amount of ink fed to each zone is adjusted by changing the digital on/off pulse rate of each valve.
It replaces ‘open fountain’ ink delivery and is designed to improve inker responsiveness and predictability while eliminating sensitivity to ink viscosity and temperature variations. Quad/Graphics has 11 web offset and gravure facilities throughout the USA and annual revenues of more than US$2 billion.
