Australia’s Newspapers of the Year: Is yours here

Jul 16, 2014 at 04:28 pm by Staff

The Newspaper Works has announced first set of finalists in this year’s Newspaper of the Year awards (PANPAs).

More than 1000 entries – covering newspapers, digital publishing, print and production, marketing, advertising and executive excellence – were submitted, with awards to be announced on the nights of August 20 and 21.

Advertising and Marketing Awards will be handed out at The Establishment in Sydney on August 20, followed by the Newspaper of the Year gala presentations at The Ivy on August 21.

“Judges have again remarked on the outstanding quality of journalism and the professionalism of our production and commercial engagement,” TNW chief executive Mark Hollands says. “The awards demonstrate that publishers are maintaining the highest standards of professionalism while making the business transformation to a balanced portfolio of print and digital assets.”

Categories for the awards were changed this year to calibrate with the segmentation of Australia’s new audience survey, emma (Enhanced Media Metrics Australia). This produced “slightly different” outcomes in terms of entry numbers, and the awards will be reviewed after the event.

“My instinct tells me it is more valuable from a marketing or reader perspective to understand a newspaper was a winner or finalist in ‘regional newspaper of the year’, rather than in a circulation bracket which doesn’t mean much outside the industry,” he says.

Finalists in the technical excellence categories are here. The final three categories to be announced – Newspaper of the Year (national/metro), Weekend Newspaper of the Year, and Print Centre of the Year are to be announced on July 22.
