In the News-owned Pacific outpost of Port Moresby, a new Tensor four-high tower has increased full colour capacity and productivity for the 26,000-circulation daily ‘Papua New Guinea Post-Courier’.
Production manager Steve O’Leary says installation of the new US-built tower, supplied by Adelaide-based National Printing Equipment, took just over two weeks with the first live production two days before Christmas. “The unit prints well and our printers find it is very user friendly,” he says.
Bob Bradford of Australasian Graphic Engineering, Queensland Newspapers engineers Alex Bagott and Henry Galm, printing manager Craig Bienvenu and O’Leary formed the installation crew.
Three Goss Community units and a tricolour UOP unit had to be repositioned to accommodate the Tensor tower. The existing SSC press, which dates from the early 1970s, includes ten mono units – four of which (in two two-highs) are used to print four-colour – and the UOP. With one mono unit providing the reelstand for the new tower, the line can now print up to 56 pages tabloid, with 20 of these in process colour.
In addition to the daily paper, the plant also produces a weekend edition called the ‘Weekend Courier’ – with a circulation of about 9000 copies – and seven community newspapers.
