MailOnline, which claims to be the biggest English-language news website, will fight for a giant share of the Australian market from next year.
The aim is to become the country’s “mass media” news destination.
Famous for its long headlines and even longer homepage, MailOnline is following the UK Guardian, which launched an Australian site this year and was central to the controversial release of information about spying activities in Indonesia.
MailOnline, with a claimed 57.3 million unique visitors, will brand as dailymail.com.au in a joint venture partnership with Mi9 – giving it access to resources from Nine Entertainment – due to launch in “early 2014”. And as with Guardian Australia, there will be no paywalls.
Publisher Martin Clarke says there will be a strong focus on editorial integrity and campaigning journalism: “We’ve had Australian readers for many years now,” he says. “Being able to provide them with the latest local news alongside the stories that matter from the Daily Mail’s reporters from around the globe, is extremely important to us.”
Working alongside the ninemsn team, he says the aim will be to create the largest digital news team in the country. It will be based from the Sydney offices of NEC and Mi9 with recruitment of “up to 50 journalists” starting immediately. Sales will be handled alongside Mi9’s ninemsn, Xbox, Skype, outlook.com and other digital properties.
