William Macleod’s 1885 illustration, The Sick Lion would be worth reproducing, even if it was not part of an exhibition in Sydney.

Our history columnist Rod Kirkpatrick, has a word for Imaging Australia Black & White Newspaper Illustration 1880-1940, at the Whitlam Institute, UWS, Parramatta:

“It’s a wonderful exhibition,” he says.

The touring exhibition is open on Thursdays and Fridays until July 25. More details at

A collection of 50 art works by 20 artists or the popular media between 1880 and 1940, it was accumulated by one man, Bulletin artist Herbert Moffitt, who recognised the value in preserving images of an era that he himself had participated in.

“He foresaw the significance of our visual culture, a visual culture that would connect future generations to his present,” says Kirkpatrick.

The exhibition is supported by the Royal Australian Historical Society and curated by Dr Janine Sager.
