Reelstand controls from Broughton Printers are the basis of an upgrade of Goss CT45 controls at an Archant Print site in the UK.

Harland Simon willl upgrade the eight control sets to current specification including colour HMI screens on the HT70 press at Archant's site in the Norwich suburb of Thorpe St Andrew. A comprehensive upgrade will eliminate obsolescence by replacing control electronics with industry standard parts, as well as the belt drive with a thyristor controlled regulator. A new interface on the reelstands will provide additional monitoring and calibration facilities to enable improved diagnostics and fault finding, with other benefits including lower splice and core waste.

Harland Simon will also replace Allen-Bradley SLC PLCs on the Goss HT70 folders with new ones from the AB Logix range. These will be programmed to replicate the functionality of the old components to ensure a smooth transition and continued performance of the folders.

Thorpe Print Centre director Clive Want says the obsolescence issues had been apparent for some time: "We are looking forward to benefitting from the security that these upgrades will provide."
