Investment in state-of-the art presses may deliver a return for publishers in Australia and New Zealand in the PANPA Newspaper of the Year awards for technical excellence, finalists for which were announced today. A copy of the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’ printed on the new Goss Uniliner press at the Rural Press Printing site in Ormiston, Queensland is among double-width finalists, as are the ‘West Australian’ (KBA Colora), and ‘Gympie Times’ and ‘Sunshine Coast Daily’ printed on the recently-installed manroland Regioman at APN Print in Yandina. Other double-width finalists are the ‘Australian Financial Review’ (printed at Fairfax Printers, Chullora), the ‘Canberra Times’, the ‘South China Morning Post’ (Hong Kong). Single-width finalists are ‘Apple Daily’ (both Hong Kong and Tainwan sites), ‘Australian Jewsih News’, ‘The Chronicle’ and the ‘Warwick Daily News’ (both printed at the new Manugraph-equipped APN Toowoomba plant), the ‘Newcastle Herald’, ‘Northern Star’ (APN Print’s new Ballina print centre, also Manugraph-equipped), and ‘Sharp Daily’ (Taiwan). Other finalist categories are; Preprint or supplement– Melbourne Recital Centre (Sunday Age), NRL Guide (Canberra Times), Noosa News Property (APN Yandina), Sharp Daily (Taiwan), SN Real Estate and Your School (both Shepparton News), and Travel Guide (West Australian). Innovation in pre-production processes or technology– APN Newspapers Leader Newspape Group, and Otago Daily Times. Environment, health and safety– Cumberland Courier Newspapers and Penright City-Star. The awards are due to be announced at the gala Newspaper of the Year dinner on September 10.
