A 64-page Goss Sunday press has been commissioned at YM Chantry in the UK, giving the group new short-grain capability.

The gapless Sunday 5000 at the site near Ipswich brings a 40 per cent increase in capacity for magazines, newspaper supplements, catalogues and brochures.

Managing director Peter Greaves says short grain is more cost-effective as it delivers higher output, especially for sub-A4 formats: "The Sunday 5000 produces high print quality which is of utmost importance to our customers, and we have been very satisfied with support on this project."

High automation enables frequent job changes and run-length flexibility and has already increased capacity at the Chantry site. YM Group is the leading exponent in short grain in the UK, where it owns most of the short grain presses.

Having previously installed a Sunday 4000 in 2014 and another early last year at TLG Leeds, YM acquired its latest Goss press following the closure of Polestar Sheffield. It has 14 web presses across four sites.

The Sunday 5000 was relocated and reconfigured to meet York Mailing's requirements and has been in full operation since February.

The 120,000cph rated 64pp short grain press, complete with the SG-3 jaw folder and twin delivery, has been complemented with a balloon former section and ribbon stitching heads under each former, allowing 24pp sections to be produced at upwards of 240,000 cph. Technology includes the latest closed loop web monitoring and quality management.
