Tower by tower, the two single-width lines at MPD in the Sydney suburb of Alexandria are gaining in colour capacity and sophistication. Last year’s installation of a fourth Tensor tower was accompanied by a new QI colour registration system. This year, while installing a fifth tower – making three on the ‘main’ line – the company has added remote inking with automatic presets based on prepress data. And, says managing director Linda Tenenbaum, “it’s truly wonderful”. So wonderful in fact, that the facility is being extended to the other towers. Following a move from Marrickville three years ago, the company has been upgrading and replicating facilities so that it now has two nine-web lines. One now has three towers and a Tensor folder plus satellite and mono units, while the other is similar but with two-towers and an SSC folder. Facilities in prepress, bindery and inserting have also been twinned. Tower upgrades have become a routine, and Tenenbaum is full of praise for Tensor, “always a pleasure to work with” and the printer-friendly unit design. MPD prints seven daily newspapers including international editions of London’s high-profile ‘Financial Times’, the Italian-language ‘La Fiamma’ and ‘Vesti’ for the Serbo-Croatian market. There’s also a wide range of community, real estate and advertising work for more than 90 publishers. gx
