Pennsylvania papers spend on more single-width upgrades

A postponed third closed-loop control project at family-owned Engle Printing Company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania is set to start next month.

Contractor DCOS installed two systems on Tensor press lines in quick succession in 2018-19, but a third was put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With business starting to come back in early 2021, the publisher decided it was time to give its 1998 Goss Universal a lift, with a drive system retrofit and update of the Allen Bradley/Harland Simon controls also on the agenda.

Engle treasurer Darly Rutt says the technology has improved quality and efficiency, and “clearly minimized” printing waste, prompting the continued replacement of older technology.

This project includes closed-loop density and register for six towers – replacing a WPC system– with partial retrofits to original and 2015 control/quality systems which have proved “difficult and costly to support”.
