Twelve years after MMP, can Catalano score in inner Melbourne

Antony Catalano is betting on being able to repeat the success that helped make his name almost a dozen years ago.

That’s how long it is since his Metro Media Publishing launched the first edition of “trailblazing Melbourne property glossy” – to quote Crikey at the time – The Weekly Review.

History relates that Fairfax Media bought the business – the second time it had paid up to regain lost advertising contracts, after The Melbourne Weekly in 2003 – and that Catalano rejoined Fairfax where he was responsible for the growth of Domain, now a subsidiary of current owners Nine Entertainment. The Melbourne Review (pictured) meanwhile, has morphed into online magazine Domain Review.

The ACM executive chairman is clearly cock-a-hoop about his return to metro Melbourne publishing, this time with a product he’s calling the Inner East ReView. ACM’s first local news, lifestyle and property publication for the city will be pitched at Richmond, Cremorne, Burnley, Abbotsford and East Melbourne, suburbs Catalano says have been “crying out for a quality local publication”.

He’s promising an “editorially diverse publication” with property as a core pillar of the offering, and based on “extensive experience in running these sorts of multimedia publications”.

The launch will be the third ReView-branded product after editions for Sydney’s Northern Beaches and Inner West, and will continue the relationship with realestateview.com.au in which Catalano and partner Alex Waislitz have moved to take a 72 per cent controlling interest.

Catalano says print continues to be “a key marketing tool” in the property sector as agents strive to reach buyers in the early phase of the buying cycle.

The first edition of the Melbourne Inner East ReView will be distributed to 15,000 homes and businesses from March 17, with Kate Cox as group editor, and Melbourne editor Ian Moore leading a team of local journalists and photographers.
