Newswire Australian Associated Press is continuing to reinvent itself after a “near death” experience when it was abandoned by principal shareholders News Corp and Nine Entertainment.

Recipient of $20 million in government grants as well as philanthropic donations, the “new AAP” has taken a page from Dickens to ask for “more”.

Visitors to the agency’s revamped website are greeted with an invitation to donate sums of $10, $100 or $500, either once, monthly or yearly.

The new website is supported by an app, AAPNews, offering subscribers “a curated selection” of its content, including a daily bulletin called The Morning Wire, which contains five top news stories, three sports stories, an “issue in focus” and a photo of the day.
Chief executive Lisa Davies says the “rather than attempting competing for advertising dollars” – or bidding to be the country’s top news website – they had chosen to show subscribers “the kind of content we produce, and increase our profile as a valued, independent news provider"… such as this sample picture from its website.

The app and website will be located behind a paywall and will cost $10 a month to access.
