Readers to bet on two parties climbing up a poll

Australians with a reputation for wanting a wager will have a chance to bet on the upcoming federal election with a new NewsCorp tipping competition.

With the winner collecting the Golden Sausage trophy, it sounds like an April 1 story, but we’re assured it’s for real.

The new SuperVoter competition runs from next Saturday (April 23), and will appear in News’ national daily, The Australian, as well as state-based metro and regional titles.

The pitch for the ‘fun, free and easy’ contest is that tipsters just have to pick the winner of each of the 151 seats contested in the upcoming election. That doesn’t sound easy to us – even if only a smaller number of electorates are actually in play – and we doubt whether it will be “free”, given News’ rigid paywalls.

A SuperVoter website will include the results of the 2019 election and the margins by which the seats are held, with punters having until May 20 to make their choices.

Consumer managing director Mark Reinke calls it “the largest fantasy sports game of its type in the country”.

Audiences are invited to challenge themselves and play, with SuperVoter offering a new way for voters to consider federal politics. “It will provide a different angle on the sentiment of Australians towards the election outcome,” says Reinke.

The winner – the first person to pick all 151 winning seats, or the highest number of correct seats – will be named Australia’s first SuperVoter and collect “the coveted SuperVoter Golden Sausage trophy”.
