Diversity campaign looks to change minds on Murdoch

A campaign for a probe into Rupert Murdoch’s media influence continues, despite a succession of setbacks.

With a Labor government now in power, Kevin Rudd's Australians for a Murdoch Royal Commission group now plans to lobby federal MPs directly, including ‘teal’ independents.

The former prime minister established the group in 2021 after a 2020 petition for a government inquiry into media diversity attracted about half a million signatures.

A Senate inquiry into media diversity chaired by Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young (pictured) paid special attention to the influence of Rupert Murdoch's media empire, but although Labor and Greens members of the committee recommended a judicial inquiry into media concentration, Labor has ruled out such an inquiry.
