Publishers and others are helping fund a study to reassess what US readers expect from newspapers.
Some 5000 adults will be polled in a national study commissioned by America's Newspapers with the support of publishers and groups including The Advocate, the Times-Picayune, NOLA.com, SNPA Foundation, Southern Newspapers, Ogden Newspapers, Gannett, Adams Publishing Group, Wick Communications, Shaw Media, Paxton Newspapers, Clarity Media Group, Inland Press Foundation, WEHCO, the Seattle Times, Press Publications and Seyfarth Shaw.
The aim is to identify the “shifting dynamics” of local news and the important role that newspapers play in providing news and information to their local communities, both large and small.
Media research firm Coda Ventures will conduct the research.
America’s Newspapers chief executive Dean Ridings says the study will provide members and the industry with comprehensive and fresh data on the role local newspapers play in their communities.
“This study will objectively look at how adults consume local news across all platforms and which sources they deem to be the most dependable and reliable. Advertisers will value this updated research.”
President Cameron Nutting Williams – who is regional publisher and chief revenue officer of Ogden Newspapers – says the investment shows the association’s commitment to the industry to provide the tools and resources needed to further their business evolution.
Sampling for the study was conducted in late October-early November, with results to be released in early 2023. In addition to the study results, America’s Newspapers says it will be releasing “a variety of other supporting marketing and sales materials” to its 1700 members.
