Two lesser-known New York dailies have changed hands, as a family-owned local publisher continues its growth path.

The growing Daily Gazette Company, headquartered in Schenectady, has taken over operations of the Register-Star and the Daily Mail in Columbia and Greene counties, together with their joint website, Hudson Valley 360.

They are the third and fourth dailies taken over by the Gazette in the past four years, following The Recorder in Amsterdam in 2019 and the Leader-Herald in Fulton County in 2021. The Gazette also publishes free weekly Your Niskayuna in Niskayuna.

Previously owned by Watertown-based Johnson Newspapers, the two newspapers – about 3000 daily of the Register-Star and 2000 of the Daily Mail, five days a week – will be printed at the Springfield Republican facilities in Massachusetts, to which the Gazette moved after closing its in-house press operations last year. Springfield Republican is owned by Newhouse Newspapers, part of Advance Publications.

Gazette president and publisher John DeAugustine said the papers would be “wonderful additions to our family of newspapers and only add to our mission of creating outstanding local journalism for generations to come”.

The Register-Star was first published in 1785, while the Daily Mail dates to 1792.
