Contributions to the print media industry by two Australians are recognised in the Australia Day awards list, announced on Sunday. John Brehmer Fairfax, now a major shareholder in the eponymous media group, adds an AO (officer in the general division of the Order of Australia) to the AM (member) he already holds. The citation also mentions his contributions to news services in rural/remote areas, and to agricultural, youth and charitable organisations. The former chairman of Rural Press Limited now sits on the board of Fairfax Media with his son Nicholas, following a merger of the two companies in 2007. Alec Mathieson, retired former general manager of Adelaide’s Messenger Newspapers, is awarded a medal in the general division of the Order of Australia (OAM). The honour recognises his contribution to the Operation Flinders Foundation, as well as to the print media industry. The charity aims to help young offenders (and those at risk of doing so) to develop self esteem, motivation and responsibility by providing them with outdoor challenges and support.
