Brazilian newsrooms upgrade and innovate

With Brazilian media riding a wave at present, two flagship publishers have announced editorial systems upgrades.

Daily newspaper Gazeta do Povo is bringing its digital, print, and magazine publishing together with EidosMedia's Méthode platform, while O Estado de S. Paulo is going live with Atex's Digital Media content management solution.

Serving Brazil's economically dynamic southern states, Gazeta do Povo is part of the multimedia portfolio of media group Grupo Paranaense de Comunicação (GRPCOM).

Following the adoption by GRPCOM of the Méthode advanced digital publication platform, the three print editions of the daily, its colour magazine supplements and its web editions are now produced in a single integrated publishing operation.

Research and development manager Silvia Zanella says the objective was to create a content management platform that would serve readers through any of the channels and devices they want to use: "Méthode has allowed us to realise that vision efficiently and flexibly."

In the print channel Méthode is used to produce the daily editions of the newspaper as well as six monthly colour supplements on topics from lifestyle to agribusiness. Art and design executive editor Marcos Tavares says their graphic designers found all the tools they needed in Méthode to create the magazine layouts.

For web and mobile readers the Gazeta publishes a single digital edition using a 'responsive design' approach: the layout adapts automatically to fit a complete range of device screen sizes. This is created by Méthode's dedicated web CMS, which has functions from story comments and reader polls to paywall management.

GRPCOM's development team has used the CMS extensibility to add a live-blogging feature used for real-time coverage of fast-moving situations such as sports events and transport strikes. A facility has also been created for managing high visitor volumes using automatic cloud-based scalability. Peaks in visitor traffic are handled through extra web-server capacity that is brought online automatically in response to an increase in visitor numbers.

General manager of EidosMedia LTDA Jancarlo Nesto says GRPCOM is one of Latin America's most innovative news and media groups with a clear idea of how they want to develop their operations to stay ahead of the market: "They are making very creative use of the Méthode platform and the Gazeta implementation is an excellent model of what a multiple-media news operation can achieve."

The next phase includes the complete redesign of the Gazeta do Povo website and creation of new content applications. This will be followed by the print and digital editions of the group's other dailies, Jornal de Londrina and Tribuna.

At O Estado de S Paulo, Atex Digital Media is managing content workflow in a newsroom of more than 400 journalists including the developer's dm.core and dm.print mobile tools.

"Changing the supporting technology and the processes of a large newsroom is always a major challenge for a newspaper, because it transforms the very hearth of the company," says editorial system coordinator Fábio Brito, " and the local and an international Atex team brought a lot of experience gained in similar projects worldwide".

O Estado de S. Paulo is published in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, and distributed nationally. It is owned by Grupo Estado, a holding company which owns radio Rádio Eldorado FM and Agência Estado, the largest news agency in Brazil.

It has the second largest circulation in the city of São Paulo, and is the fourth largest overall in Brazil.
